[in margin] James Shockley 412 Acres Examined Thomas Jefferson Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia to all to whom these presents shall come greeting. Know ye that in Consideration of the Ancient Composition of forty five Shillings Sterling paid by James Shockley into the Treasury of this Commonwealth there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto the said James Shockley a certain Tract or parcel of Land, Containing four hundred and twelve Acres by Survey bearing date the second day of November One Thousand Seven hundred and seventy seven. Lying and being in the County of Pittsylvania on both sides of Little Turkey Creek and bounded as followeth to wit. Beginning at his corner white oak and thence along his Lines North sixty nine degrees West Sixty poles Crossing the Creek to a white oak in the old Lines: thence new Lines South twenty seven degrees west one hundred and sixty two poles to a Black Jack: South fifty seven degrees East two hundred and forty four poles Crossing the Creek and a Branch to a white Oak: North twenty seven degrees East two hundred and seventy four Poles to a Black Jack: North thirty four degrees West one hundred and ten poles to a Hickory North nine degrees West one hundred and six Poles to Pointers: North Seventy and a half degrees West twenty eight poles to Pointers in his Line aforesaid thence along the same South forty two degrees West forty poles to a Corner: South twenty one and half degrees West one hundred and Seventy six poles Crossing a Branch to the Beginning with its appurtenances to have and to hold the said Tract or parcel of Land, with its appurtenances to the said James Shockley and his Heirs forever. In witness whereof, the said Thomas Jefferson Esquire Governor or the Commonwealth of Virginia hath hereunto set his hand and caused the seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Richmond on the first day of September in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven hundred and eighty and of the Commonwealth the fifth.
