At a Court Martial begun and held in the County aforesaid at the Town of Smithfield at the Court House in Smithfield on the fifteenth day of August in the Year of our Lord 1777.
Present the States Officers for the County aforesaid (to wit)

The above Field Officers took the Oaths for eh Qualification of public Officers & took their Seats accordingly, after which the other Gentlemen abovementioned took the Oath for the Qualification of Public Officers and took their seats accordingly.

Colo. John Smith, Lieut. Col. Samuel Smith, Major Arthur Bryan, Major Lewis Bryan to the Oath for the Qualification of public Officers also the oath perscribed by Law to be taken by the Militia Officers & took their Seats accordingly.

Capt. John McCullers, Capt. Elisha Thomas, Capt. Thomas Lee, Lieut. Philip Rayford, Lieut. Jonathan Smith, Lieut. Jacob Stevens, Ensign Joseph Ingram, & Ensign William Oneal took the oath perscribed by Law to be taken by the Militia Officers & took their Seats accordingly.

43b-c 5/25/1779
Ordered that the Company of Militia as Commanded by Lieut. Rayford be divided into two distinct Companies, and that the Bawdy Swamp be the dividing line, also that part of Capt. Lee's Company be added to the Company on the South side of the said Swamp, to begin at John Hays plantation on the south side of Neuse River & to go a straight line from there to George Fields & to continue a straight line from there to the Widow Stevens's to include the said John Hays, George Fields and Widow Stevens plantations & all the Effected Men contained within the aforesaid bounds and the Duplin line and Neuse River, and it is further ordered that the following Gentlemen be recommended to the Field Officers for their approbation to be appointed Officers for the Company on the North side of the aforesaid Swamp (to wit) Philip Rayford Captain, Benjamin Crafford Lieutenant, and Lewis Gurley Ensign, And John Whitley Capt. Joseph Ingram Lieutenant, and Jacob Stevens Ensign, for the Company on the south side of the said Swamp.
